From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ epic sci-fi action adventure “Pacific Rim.”

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Oscar® nominee Guillermo del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth”) is directing “Pacific Rim” from a script by Travis Beacham (“Clash of the Titans”). Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Mary Parent are producing, with Callum Greene serving as executive producer.

The film stars Charlie Hunnam (TV’s “Sons of Anarchy”), Idris Elba (“Thor”), Rinko Kikuchi (“The Brothers Bloom”), Charlie Day (“Horrible Bosses”), and Ron Perlman (the “Hellboy” films). The ensemble cast also includes Max Martini, Robert Kazinsky, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff, and Brad William Henke.

Guillermo Del Toro Invades Toronto; Pacific Rim Filming Already Underway

In the near future, a portal to another universe opens up five miles beneath the surface of the Pacific, leading to the emergence of myriad monstrosities that relentlessly assault such chaos-magnet metropolises as Los Angeles and Tokyo. To counter the threat, the military develops high-tech mechas to battle the creatures.

The movie looks set to be a homage to the Japanese kaiju genre of movies, most famously exemplified by the Godzilla series. In an interview with Wired, del Toro described the movie as a “very beautiful poem to giant monsters,” as well as prominently featuring “25-story-high robots beating the crap out of 25-story-high monsters.” He also stated that the film would deal with the political and geological ramifications of the sudden appearance of such creatures.

Filming on Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim has now been underway for over six weeks at Pinewood Toronto Studios, taking up five of the complex’s seven soundstages.

In an interview with io9, del Toro revealed that initial filming was for the Hong Kong-set complex where the mechas are maintained and will continue at the studio until April.

Pacific Rim will star Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, and del Toro stalwart Ron Pearlman, and is set to begin its rampage through cinema screens on May 10th 2013.

‘Pacific Rim’ Set to Arrive Two Months Earlier

Good news for Guillermo del Toro fans! His next project, Pacific Rim will hit theaters two months earlier than originally announced. His first directing project since 2008’s Hellboy II, the film will arrive in theaters on May 10, 2013.

The film will arrive from a science fiction treatment by Travis Beacham, which sees a future Earth defending itself from attacking creatures.

“We started developing PAC RIM a while ago with the mad passion and enthusiasm of a project unwatched and unchecked by politics or comparisons,” said del Toro earlier this year,”We designed and shepherded the movie we want to make. We start shooting in September and we hit the ground running because we are so in sync. My partnership with Legendary represents, both in scale and creative demands, a huge step forward for me.”

The cast is set to include Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi, Max Martini, Robert Kazinsky, Clifton Collins Jr. and Diego Klattenhoff.

Diego Klattenhoff joins ‘Pacific Rim’

Diego Klattenhoff, who co-stars on Howard Gordon’s new Showtime series “Homeland,” has joined the cast of Guillermo del Toro’s “Pacific Rim,” an epic actioner that pits invading monsters against robots.
Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba star alongside Charlie Day, Willem Dafoe, Rinko Kikuchi, Max Martini, Rob Kazinsky and Clifton Collins Jr.

Klattenhoff’s role is being kept under wraps, though he is expected to appear in the film’s opening scene.

Travis Beacham’s script is set in 2025, the 12th year of a war against alien creatures who reside in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Story finds a group of humans banding together to create and pilot massive robots to fight the giant creatures threatening to destroy Earth.

“Pacific Rim” is one of the first titles that Legendary Pictures is fully self-financing, after having co-financed and produced most of its films with Warner Bros., which will release the film on July 12, 2013.
